Sampling of Concrete Materials for Testing

This course in combined with Laboratory Testing pertaining to Concrete

Overview:

Sampling fresh concrete for construction laboratory testing is of paramount importance as it directly influences the quality, durability, and overall performance of concrete structures. Accurate sampling is a critical step in ensuring that the concrete mix meets the required specifications and standards.

The primary goal of sampling fresh concrete is to obtain representative samples that accurately reflect the properties of the entire batch. Proper sampling enables construction professionals to assess the concrete’s workability, consistency, and air content, which are crucial factors in achieving uniform and reliable concrete placements.

Industry standards for concrete testing, such as TMH5 and SANS provide specific guidelines for the sampling process to ensure consistency and reliability of results. Following these standards helps in obtaining precise data for the mix design optimization, thereby improving the overall efficiency of construction projects.

Moreover, laboratory testing of fresh concrete samples allows for the evaluation of various properties, such as compressive strength, setting time, and potential for segregation. These tests aid in identifying any potential issues with the concrete mix early on, allowing for adjustments and improvements before the concrete is used in critical applications.

Accurate and reliable sampling of fresh concrete also contributes to quality control and quality assurance throughout the construction process. By monitoring the concrete’s properties at different stages, construction professionals can identify any variations and take appropriate corrective measures to ensure the final product meets the required standards.

In summary, sampling fresh concrete for laboratory testing is a fundamental aspect of construction quality management. Following industry standards and conducting precise testing allows engineers and construction teams to create durable and reliable concrete structures that can withstand the test of time. Proper sampling and testing contribute to the success of construction projects, ensuring that the built environment is safe, resilient, and of the highest quality.

Days: 4 (+ 2 Weeks Workplace Practical)
This course in combined with Sampling of concrete materials for testing

Overview:

Upon successful assessment of this course, learners will demonstrate their competence in executing standard laboratory testing specific to concrete used in the Construction Industry.

Through this course, participants will develop the ability to identify hazards and implement protective measures during concrete testing. They will gain expertise in preparing concrete samples for testing, utilizing the required apparatus during the process, and accurately recording readings following standard methods.

The course plays a vital role in shaping the overall competence of construction materials testers, ensuring they possess the necessary skills to deliver quality results. The laboratory test outcomes serve as a cornerstone for quality control during the construction and manufacturing processes and the final acceptance of finished products.

The course is designed to offer both practical experience and theoretical knowledge. Over the span of 4 days, learners will be immersed in theoretical learning and engaging in practical assessments.

To further enhance their understanding and expertise, learners will gain hands-on experience in the Civil Laboratory for four weeks (28 Days Concrete Curing Time). During this period, they will submit the results of an Accredited Laboratory Test involving a set of Concrete Cubes (6). This will serve as the final evidence of completion in the form of a Portfolio of Evidence.

If learners are not employed in a Civil Laboratory, they will be referred to the nearest Civil Laboratory to undergo the practical experience and complete the course requirements. By the end of this comprehensive course, learners will be well-equipped to make a valuable contribution to the construction industry, ensuring quality and excellence in concrete testing.

Learners found Competent will be capable of the following

  • Determining the Quantity, Dimensions, and Type of Samples Required for Each Test.
  • Identifying the Material to Be Sampled for Testing Purposes.
  • Preparing the Material Intended for Sampling and Testing.
  • Carrying Out the Sampling Procedures for the Concrete Material.
  • Appropriately Labeling and Transporting the Collected Samples.
  • Preparation of Sampled Concrete for Laboratory Testing.
  • Conducting Comprehensive Laboratory Tests on the Concrete according to specified standard methods.
  • Accurately Recording and Safely Storing Test Results for Concrete.
